Mariel Hemingway

Mariel Hemingway walked into my dimly lit radio studio, warm and smiling. And vulnerable. She—granddaughter of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Ernest Hemingway–wasn’t there to tout her celebrity with her book Finding My Balance, but to inspire her readers.

Ah! My kind of author. I’ve never been the type to go slack-jawed and non-verbal at the nearness of a celebrity. With me, it’s more of a sense of melting into who they are so I could perhaps learn their magic. Then there’s curiosity about how they emerged from whatever pain they’d had to being their authentic selves.

Mariel Hemingway uses yoga poses to retrain her mind and find peace. The Eagle pose, for example, focuses on the balance between your male and female. Mariel says she felt like a “control freak,” and doing the Eagle pose brought her that balance she desired.

I felt attracted to her book because of my consistent adherence to performing dance, even while pregnant, and the docs said don’t do it. Yoga, dance—they calm the mind.

Mariel concluded our interview saying that she hopes to share calm with Finding My Balance. Especially now that she’s healed from the pain in the family into which she was born. She lives in peace, and Mariel says she hopes others will be inspired by her journey.
